We’re almost ready to launch Greenfibers' 3rd facility for production of responsible fiber

GreenFiber International received an investment of 35 million EUR from private funds, in its third production facility for synthetic fibers made out of 100% recycled PET, to become the biggest European producer on this segment. The new plant, located in Urziceni, Ialomita county,  has a total production capacity of 30,000 tons/ year of synthetic polyester fiber.  Adding also Buzau and Iasi facilities, the national production capacity of GreenFiber will approximate be 80,000 tons/year.

At the moment,  the production team and R&D departments evaluate the performance and quality of the fiber. We are in the laboratory testing period, on very large lots, to meet the required standards. Also, the quality of the fiber produced in Urziceni is guaranteed by the OEKO-TEX 100 standard. The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished, and finished textile products at all processing levels, as well as accessory materials used. The objective of the standard is to ensure that the production of all types of textile products are safe from a human-ecological point of view.

Within the production process in GreenFiber, PET flakes resulted from the sorting, crushing and washing of PET bottles, are melted into thin threads and transformed into synthetic fibers, an output resembling natural wool. For the new production sites to work at full capacity, 162,000 tons/year of PET bottles will have to be processed, which is more than the total amount of PET put annually on the Romanian market.

The new Urziceni facility has continuous activity throughout the year, organized in three shifts, creating new jobs for Urziceni residents and those from neighbor cities. At the end of the project, the total number of GreenFiber employees in Romania will exceed 800.

Synthetic polyester fibers replaces virgin fibers and can provide advanced solutions for the Textile Industry, Automotive, Hygiene, Construction and Home textile.

Unlike polyester, recycled polyester uses PET as the raw material, meaning that  using more recycled polyester reduces our dependence on petroleum as the raw material for our fabric needs. In the same time, it diverts the PET bottles from landfill.

The steps involved in the production process are as follows:

  • The PET Bottles are collected and recycled, with a final result in a tiny and clean small piece of plastic called PET fakes.
  • For the production of sinthetic polyester fibers, PET flakes are dried in rotary dryers and then processed by being melted and extruded into filaments.
  • During finishing, the filaments are passed through a crimping machine to create a fluffy wooly texture.
  • Finally, the fiber is cut into various sizes, reaching a fluff that has the characteristics of wool or cotton and packed in bales.

Smart collection and support for social causes have a common denominator called SIGUREC.

The intelligent collection stations called Sigurec are offering a possibility to engage and support actively a series of social causes. Therefore, someone who brings recyclable waste at SIGUREC has the option to donate the value of the voucher released to a not-for-profit organization.
